We examine how ableism impacts patient care and medical education\, while highlighting the value healthcare professionals with disabilities bring to medicine. Through the lens of the Stanford Alliance for Disability Inclusion and Equity (SMADIE)\, participants will learn practical approaches to creating more inclusive medical environments that benefit all patients and providers. The session emphasizes disability as a form of diversity that enriches healthcare through multiple perspectives and experiences.\n\n\n\nLearning Objectives:\n\n\n\nRecognize Ableism in Healthcare: Identify common manifestations of ableism in healthcare settings and their impact on patient outcomes.Implement Inclusive Practices: Apply specific strategies to create more accessible and equitable healthcare environments for patients and providers with disabilities.Advance Representation: Describe the unique value and perspective that healthcare professionals with disabilities bring to patient care and medical education.\n\n\n\nPresenters:\n\n\n\nKen Sutha\, MD\, PhD\, is a board certified pediatric nephrologist and instructor at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford (LPCH) and Stanford University School of Medicine in Palo Alto\, CA where he devotes his time to a combination of patient care\, advocacy\, and research. A two time kidney transplant recipient himself\, he serves as co-chair of the Stanford Medicine Alliance for Disability Inclusion and Equity (SMADIE) and on the Board of Directors for the Disability in Medicine Mutual Mentorship Program (DM3P).\n\n\n\nPeter Poullos\, MD\, is faculty in both Radiology and Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Stanford University School of Medicine. In 2018\, he founded the Stanford Medicine Alliance for Disability Inclusion and Equity (SMADIE)\, for which he serves as Co-Chair. In that role\, Dr. Poullos advocates for students and healthcare providers with disabilities and for health equity for disabled patients. He is a Faculty Advisor to the Stanford Medical Students with Disability and Chronic Illness (MSDCI) and the MSDCI National organizations.Dr. Poullos and SMADIE have made significant contributions to the disability community\, including starting the annual Stanford Conference on Disability in Healthcare and Medicine\, drawing over 1800 participants from 52 countries. He is the Co-Host of the popular “Docs With Disabilities” podcast\, has spoken internationally about disability access in medicine\, and has written and researched in the field. One of his proudest achievements is co-creating the Disability in Medicine Mutual Mentorship Program (DM3P)\, serving the needs of disabled medicine and healthcare students and practitioners. In 2022\, Dr. Poullos received the Stanford President’s Award for Excellence through Diversity. Dr. Poullos enjoys teaching radiology and inclusion at Stanford and across the nation.
